I woke up earlier than normal this morning and could not go back to sleep, so I turned on the TV and one of the most terrifying movies I've seen was on... you may think Dead Calm is not considered a scary movie, but it is to me.
Dead Calm is Nicole Kidman's first major role (in 1989) as far as I can tell and she did a great job of making me feel horrified of being in her shoes. Nicole is gorgeous, but she's also an outstanding actress.
This movie is about a couple (Nicole and Sam Neill) on a sailboat in the middle of the ocean. They are enjoying life until they come across Billy Zane who seems like a nice enough guy... but ends up being a maniac. I don't want to ruin it for you, but there are several scenes that are terrifying - like the scene where one of the characters is in a hopeless situation: in the middle of the ocean, no life vest, no boat, just floating, waiting to get to tired of staying afloat, sinking and eventually drowning. Another scene shows one of the actors locked inside a sinking ship... watching this person trying to breathe and find a way to survive is exasperating and (as I've said several times) terrifying.
I've seen many other really scary movies, but this one scares the living daylights out of me because of the way it's written, acted and directed... in my opinion, a truly great movie. I recommend it.
